“The human need to relate with the natural world finds many outlets. For painters, the urge to capture nature’s intrigue is most compelling. With paint and canvas, confined to two dimensions, we set forth to capture that elusive beauty lavished upon us by nature. In Leelanau, I find a dazzling abundance of compositions from which to draw painting inspiration and a public of art conscious people drawn here by a mutual appreciation of the beauty of this land.” Gene Rantz, 2005

Old Apple Tree
Old apple trees, especially around foundations of long forgotten houses and barns, develop great character. Long neglected, their fruit only of interest to opportunist deer and mice, they age into delightful shapes, offering tempting subjects for painters and photographers.
Apple trees acquire great character as they age. The tree featured in this simple relaxing composition is old but still persistently bearing fruit. The last rays of the afternoon sun is emitting a warm, golden hue to the October sky and surrounding countryside. The background trees have found their varied autumn colors and are awaiting the November winds to remove them to their destiny. The wild apples will soon fall to the ground to become feed for roving deer, coyotes, mice and, who knows, perhaps a bear. Gene Rantz, 2005.
