“The human need to relate with the natural world finds many outlets. For painters, the urge to capture nature’s intrigue is most compelling. With paint and canvas, confined to two dimensions, we set forth to capture that elusive beauty lavished upon us by nature. In Leelanau, I find a dazzling abundance of compositions from which to draw painting inspiration and a public of art conscious people drawn here by a mutual appreciation of the beauty of this land.” Gene Rantz, 2005

Northport Harbor
The old fishtugs of the Great Lakes are probably not exactly beautiful to the eyes of most folks, certainly not to be considered graceful by any nautical standards. However, beauty aside, they were built to provide shelter and stability for commercial Great Lakes fishermen who must tend nets often in cold, rough, unpleasant conditions. And for that they quite adequately serve the purpose. This painting is of a fishtug from Omena as it docked in Northport Harbor (convenient for me since the harbor is within easy view from my home). As an artist, I find the old fishing boats quite beautiful, especially in the evening glow of the setting sun as seen in this painting. Gene Rantz
