“The human need to relate with the natural world finds many outlets. For painters, the urge to capture nature’s intrigue is most compelling. With paint and canvas, confined to two dimensions, we set forth to capture that elusive beauty lavished upon us by nature. In Leelanau, I find a dazzling abundance of compositions from which to draw painting inspiration and a public of art conscious people drawn here by a mutual appreciation of the beauty of this land.” Gene Rantz, 2005

The Narrows 12x24
Lake Leelanau consists of two long lakes that extend nearly the length of the Leelanau peninsula and in early times served as a transportation route for many on the peninsula. The narrows is a very scenic waterway connecting the two lakes.
I painted this picture as a donation to the Lake Leelanau Association to be raffled off to help raise money and awareness to help fend off developers who wanted to build several boat slips directly in the traffic lane of this heavily used ribbon of water. At the time of this painting, we do not know the outcome of this travesty. We can only hope that logic and concern for our natural legacy wins out. Gene Rantz
